Kathryn Harrison’s books detail a tumultuous incestuous relationship with her father that lasted for four long years.

“ Appalling , but attractively publish . ” That ’s how theNew York Timesdescribed Kathryn Harrison ’s fib . And , to be fair , the observation is n’t far off . The story , wrapped neatly in a memoir titledThe Kiss , is dismaying as the titular kiss she refers to is one between her 20 - class - old self and her 37 - year - old father .

For most of Kathryn Harrison ’s life , her father was not present . Her parents married when they were just 17 and her father pull up stakes in short after . Harrison ’s mother also walked out five years subsequently , leaving her in the care of her grandparent .

“ I think of meet my father only twice as a kid for brief visits , ” Harrison recall , in an interviewwith Oprah about her playscript . Her grandparents had told him that if he left quietly , they would n’t follow up on child support . He did as he was told , and only stopped by once or twice as his daughter was growing up .

“ As I grew up , I fabricate a father who was larger than life — strong , smarter , more handsome and even holy than other humanity , ” she enjoin . “ Having been abandoned by my mother , I was sure I was worthless of such a father ’s love . ”

When she was a junior in college , enrolled at Stanford University ( “ I was the ripe young lady who never needed disciplining , who made straight A ’s ” ) , her father appeared out of the blue for a weeklong visit . He ’d gone to college , become a curate , and want to fulfill his girl .

“ Here he was , at last , the begetter I ’d cook up for myself , ” she enjoin . “ The one who know precisely what to say , that all the years I ’d loved and wanted him . He , too , had loved and desire me . ”

“ He forced his lingua into my mouth and then he just picked up his bag , waved so long and got on the planing machine , ” she said , describe it as “ wet , insistent , explore , then withdrawn . I stood in the airport for I do n’t even know how retentive with my hand over my mouth . ”

She goes on to identify the depression and paralyzation that followed the incident , and how it affected her school . Then , however , the tone changes and Harrison is suddenly a woman rationalizing the buss .

“ I remain uncomfortable about the buss , but I kept saying to myself , ‘ Well , perhaps it was n’t so bad . ’ Or , ‘ Maybe you made it up yourself , ' ” she said . “ I remember at that time in my living I was somebody who had a hard time turning down passion in whatever flesh it was offered . ”

For the next four years , the two would hire in anincestuousrelationship . The two would spend near every day on the speech sound or write letters to each other and later spent time traveling together .

“ We meet at airport , ” she said , at the root of the book . “ We meet in cities where we ’ve never been before . We meet where no one will recognize us . These nowheres and notimes are the only home we have . ”

Eventually , upon the last of her grandparent , the kinship ended . As the two break ways , her founding father told her that her liveliness was over .

“ It ’s too late for you , ” she say he secernate her . “ You ’ve made your pick . You ’ve had sex with me , and no man will ever have you . You wo n’t be able to keep the secret , and you ’ll always be alone . ”

Over the year , Kathryn Harrison proved him untimely . She is now married with three children , and a successful novelist . The Kissis her third novel and the third one which explores her incestuous relationship with her father , but the first that appears in a memoir format .

Upon the freeing of her book , the story was pick apart by Scripture critic from around the country .
