Tall buildings often have tune up mass dampers hidden inside their structures to steady them against the wind . Those tuned aggregative dampers are huge and weighed down and help limit a building ’s motion by sway in the opposite direction of the building . That is , if the wind is making a skyscraper sway to the right hand , the damper will sway to the left hand to dissipate the kinetic energy , and boil down the , um , swaying . What ’s interesting is that the Burj Khalifa , the world ’s tallest building , does n’t have that .

Real Engineeringexplains how the Burj Khalifa instead relies on super clever aerodynamics to restrict its apparent movement . The building , which was based on the Hymenocallis bloom , prevents vortices from forming by stacking the building up in a spiraling pattern . The picture explain in more detail , but it ’s really interesting to learn about how dissimilar skyscrapers utilize different method to get tall and taller .
