There may be one obvious divergence between Oscar Pistorius of South Africa and his fellow sprinters at the London Olympics this twelvemonth . Nicknamed the " Blade Runner , " Pistorius is the first treble amputee to qualify for the summer Olympics . He ’s competing wearing a pair of carbon vulcanized fiber prosthetics designed for sprint .

Yet there other interesting differences , too . His " blades " do n’t lick exactly the elbow room legs do , so he has to apply unlike muscles while lean to make up for it .

prosthetics, olympics

Pistorius ' prosthetics work like springs , Hugh Herr , an engineer who studies prosthetics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , say in an interview with the National Science Foundation ( NSF ) . They store energy when Pistorius presses down on them with every footstep , and then release that Department of Energy when he lifts his leg . [ Watchvideo showing how Pistorius ' prosthetics work ]

That does n’t mean the blades give him anadvantage over able - bodied athletes , say researcher the NSF interview . Pistorius has no sensation in them and they have no muscles , Herr say . Pistorius makes up for these differences by using more of his downcast abdominal and upper body muscles .

Pistorius ' prostheticsbrought him plenty of attentionin the test - up to the Olympics , especially as he argued with the International Association of Athletics Federations to be grant to vie alongside able - bodied runners . Yet he does n’t necessarily find very dissimilar from able - bodied athletes , he tell .

" I ’m very well-chosen with my aspect of you putting on your shoes and me commit on my prosthetic legs , " Pistorius said , " and that ’s where I see my day starting and my impairment terminate . "
