We were invited to visit the set while Len Wiseman was filming his version of Philip K. Dick ’s We Can Remember It for You Wholesale well known as Total Recall in the cinemas . So how does it liken with the classic Paul Verhoeven picture ? It ’s all dissimilar , thankfully . After poking about through the sets and welt down inside Wiseman ’s epic set piece , call the “ China Fall , ” we ’re find very few similarities between the two icon — beside the Total Rekall cognitive process itself .

New Asia Vs . Mars

yield designer Patrick Tatopoulos explained the face they were channelize was dark , dampish and grungy . Citizens of New Asia had to deal with smogginess , window pane rainfall , and being evermore damp from a smelly mist . They ’re also pelt with holographical ads at every corner , consider a genuine life history pop up ad at every step . We got to explore a drain , vacant alley of New Asia . A large canal ( full of black water ) wrap around brownish buildings covered in wires . It expect like the back closing of a Brooklyn flat construction where everyone is splicing cable off of any telegram that moves , times 100 . Lots and passel of cables and filth .
Meanwhile , Quaid ’s apartment was pretty far out , which was inhale by the Habitat in Montreal . Tatopoulos said this was where the “ downcast collars ” live .
Patrick Tatopoulos : There was a stack of great employment done on the older movie . The vibe and the tone of the movie is quite different in the first place . The worlds are different . Quaid ’s apartment , for object lesson , is quite dissimilar . In a gumption , the original film find more scifi to me . When you arrive at his flat at the kickoff , it ’s so scifi right there . I think our approach is a niggling bit more like saying : you almost start the celluloid thinking like you ’re in the regular existence , and then when you spread your windowpane it ’s like , screwing ! Everything is dissimilar . That kind of vibe . There are go to be a lot of element that are placeable .

China Falls Vs . Alien Reactor
The lynchpin of Wiseman ’s activeness moving-picture show is The China Fall . A massive elevator that take thousands of people from one side of the Earth to the other . Through the center of the Earth ( so much for that whole grounded matter ) .
Given that the China Fall is the focal spot of this whole film , the production squad went to monumental lengths to reconstruct a giant elevator that film through the Earth . As far as notional elevator go , this was telling . Designed to look something like an amusement ride , with the rider strapped in , the white beast plumb bob through the Earth , but in doing so it also rotates around , with the floor becoming the cap and the ceiling becoming the base . The set itself has this insane mirror effect going on , because the storey and ceiling had to be interchangeable . I immediately want to watch ridiculously attractive Hollywood types fight on it . And that ’s what it was build for . Production Designer Tatopoulus explain more :
Patrick Tatopoulos : We make it a trip of about 15 – 20 mo . It ’s very brief . It goes really fast . citizenry use the clip to interpret information , news show , thing like that . Basically you just go sit in there - – the seats are very like to those you ’d find in an entertainment parkland ride . They keep you in place . If you take a steel chunk and let it go through the Earth , it ’ll take about 30 minutes , which is incredibly fast , in my mind .
They also constructed the roof of one side of the elevator . It look like the top of a massive steel tomb , and again was perfect for a shoot - out . We assume the large defective Cohaagen has a dastardly architectural plan for it — otherwise , why would they be spending so much clip in this massive elevator ? No clue , but it ’s pathetic and amazing at the same time . An utterly imperative part of any “ fun ” action motion picture . But if Falls conk out to deliver , this whole movie could topple around it .
Colin Farrell Vs . Arnold Schwarzenegger
Tough call . We did n’t get to see too much of Colin in action — we did get to see a lot of Colin buss and being sweet to Lori , but not so much with the fucking - kicking . The two actors really could n’t be more dissimilar , and in the aerodynamic action base movie that Wiseman is gun for , the more nimble and slender Farrell have a bit more sense . We ask Farrell how he felt about being in a remake ( yet again ) and this was his very honest reply :
Farrell : I am trusting Len ’s imaginativeness and I am trusting that there is enough . You know , the inning work of the story is the same . If anyone has read the inadequate story … the original is not so much like the short taradiddle , and this is not so much like the short tarradiddle . The short story is really fucking dark and blinking genius . What he accomplish in 18 or 19 page is so astonishing in how he can flex my cerebrum and have me imagine what is veridical and what is not . But that is a different film . That is Kafka and this is not that . I just trust and hope that there will be enough because it is a weird thing with remakes . I am have got a bit of an experience now with remakes because of Fright Night and then this . Part of me wants to rationalize , part of me wants to win over all of the old fans , and part of me wants to go “ Fuck everyone ! ”
I do n’t know what to do . You are damned if you do and you are damned if you do n’t . There seems to be this thing where it is like “ Why do a remaking if it is just going to be the same exact thing ? ” So then you do a remaking , reimagining , or a reinvestment in a story and it is different enough . Then they are like “ They did n’t even put that matter in ! ” So you are anathemise either way . I just hope that this will be an single cinema experience . I really do … I am not beyond criticizing myself and my own work . But I hope the fans of the original bask it and I hope it discover a new hearing . Maybe some people will go back and watch the original . Who sleep together ?
New Gadgets Vs . Old convenience
Wiseman was funnily mum about what contrivance might be get back from Verhoeven ’s translation . He did say , though , that he was n’t interested in repeating anything Verhoeven has done , out of respect to the original movie . But we did get to witness a compendium of new electronics , the strangest of all being the hand phone . It is literally a speech sound embedded into your hand . So when people get a phone call , they have to put their paw up to their face . We look out Wiseman twinkle up Kate Beckinsale ’s face a few times while she was chatting with her bossman Vilos Cohaagen ( played by Bryan Cranston ) .
Other slight gadgets we spy include the elephantine hologram billboards and the shrapnel camera ( which was shown in the prevue ) . Oh and we know she ’s not a gadget but the three - breasted lady is in there . No , we did n’t get to see her , but Farrell corroborate it . Sadly , Wiseman is angling for a PG-13 flick so …
Cranston Vs . coxswain
We ’ll just let Bryan Cranston himself explain exactly how these two persona dissent :
Bryan Cranston : [ Villains are ] always the adept pen roles , I ’m telling you it ’s so much merriment . But there is that trap that you may get into , with that mustache twisting bad guy . You do n’t need to do that . I do n’t require to do that desk pound off “ GET HIM ! ” that type of affair “ Rarrrh ! ” My attack to this is that Quaid / Hauser was a pricey admirer of mine , and I looked upon him almost like a son . So I urgently assay to do anything within my baron , to rule him in . And the way of life I ’m playing it , and hopefully it will come off this way , is that he ’s like a disaffected teenager . He just has to have a little baffling love , be sort out and he ’ll come around . And when he come around we ’ll be back together again and I ’m depend forward to that . And he does n’t , and he does n’t , and we have to penalise him further …
[ The difference between me and ] Ronny Cox ? … I did n’t need to be that bozo . That mustache twisting guy rope . So my message was , I need wavy hair ( this is a little spray properly now ) . I want light hair and have it kind of wavy . I said , “ John Edwards , ” I want a John Edwards softness to him , so it ’s not “ here comes the bad guy ! ” I wanted to change that up and approach it that way . Because what he ’s doing is already dastardly . I do n’t think you need to introduce that . Ronny Cox wore disconsolate clothing , coloured suits , and that sort of matter . I wanted to go more natty and tog in these Tom Ford suits that I ’m wear . All courteous and tailored . All of my suit of clothes and shirts everything is by Tom Ford . And it feel so dear , it feel crisp when you outwear it . It does change you when you wear something like that . It make me feel , I do n’t recognise , stronger in a way . Not in a demonic sort of way , just more potent . If I think of aright I think Ronny had his hair kind of sleek back , I just wanted to take this glide slope . Otherwise you ’re just doing something that ’s derivative .
Cranston came on hardening in a slick - as - hell suit , front all kinds of devilishly handsome and up to no good . Later on in the visit , we heard him barking yelling orders at his muscleman , Kate Beckinsale / Lori . It was delicious . We ’re really excited to see someone like Cranston take on such a traditional villain type part . It ’s a cagey gaming on a banal image , plus we ’re happy to see Cranston in a courtship any day . And evil John Edwards , FTW .
As far as his evil deeds , Cranston would only hint as to what this villain was up to :
Bryan Cranston : Even 20 years ago when Total Recall was first made , lifetime was a short different . It will be 22 years , by the fourth dimension our film number out . And life was different . Kate Beckinsale Vs . Sharon Stone
Think Patrick Bateman vs. Darth Vader . While we did n’t get to speak with Beckinsale , we did watch her clomp around in sinister pleather ensemble inside a very Star Wars - esque hallway of China Falls , flank by a net ton of stormtrooper - looking minion in plastic lily-white causa . It was impossible to think of anything other than Darth Vader . From the little that we see , the original dame McCrazy pants , Sharon Stone , played the “ lunatic seductress ” circuit card a lot harder . Wiseman ’s Lori has absorb Michael Ironside ’s role from the older oeuvre , and is now Cohaagen ’s muscle . We did n’t get to see the much - hyped fight between Beckinsale and Biel ( who play Melina ) but we ’re pretty excited to watch these two just beat the ever - love damn out of each other .
Jessica Biel Vs . Rachel Ticotin
Melina ! The difference of opinion between the two Melinas lies in the interpersonal chemistry . Not to ping Arnold , but we never really buy into the whole Quaid / Melina relationship in the first motion-picture show — we were in it more for Mars and the voiceless knocks . After watching Biel cry a single tear on command in 23 disjoined takes , we might be a little slanted … but there ’s alchemy here . And it ’s spicy . Then again , it ’s credibly not too knockout to come up chemistry with the devilishly charming Farrell , but they had it . Also new , Melina ’s backstory has been flesh out well . In our interview with Biel , she revealed that her character has family ties to the resistance , but did n’t go on too much farther from there .
Matthias Vs . Kuato
No one would really utter about the novel Kuato . Which is o.k. , we like to stay reasonably spoiler - detached when we can , but we were very surprised by how downplayed this persona appeared to be on set . The only affair we learned was Kuato ’s name has been changed to Matthias . And he ’s probably not living in someone ’s stomach . The constant vehemence on “ keep it grounded ” scifi , and the total lack of mutants on solidifying and in the concept fine art or anywhere else has us believing that the mutant world has been all but scrapped .
The dismissal of the mutants is all part of the note that Wiseman is transfer . It feel entirely more activity - found than the original . Wiseman ’s world building is undercoat in the slick high - tech hereafter , such as hover cars , automatic police officers and giant elevator that crash through the Earth ( which still make us express joy ) . Meanwhile , Verhoeven ’s employment was planted in the crimson soil of the gyration on Mars . One film is peddling a good time , the other wanted to freak you the fucking out .
Bottom agate line : As long as Wiseman ’s pic hold proceed at a speedy action pace , it looks like there ’s a merriment film in there . Plus you could usually trust on Cranston and Farrell bringing the charm and excitement . Just do n’t stop moving , ever .
