It was just yesterday when we showed youwhat would pass off if you got too close to a thawing glacier in Greenland — a worrying coup d’oeil of what ’s becoming a regular fixture in that part of the human race . And now , as we find ourselves having to put up yet another scorchingly raging July , new data from NASA indicates that Greenland ’s ice is indeed melting — but at a rate we ’ve never seen before .

Looking at NASA ’s map , it appear that about every part of Greenland ’s ice mainsheet experienced some degree of airfoil melting . And in fact , the data suggests that about 97 % of the surface area melted at some stop in July . NASA notes that summertime thaw are normal — but not on this shell . In fact , when the meltage data first begin coming in , the scientist think it was an misplay . From theirrelease :
“ The Greenland meth sheet is a vast area with a wide-ranging history of variety . This event , combined with other instinctive but uncommon phenomena , such as the big calving event last week on Petermann Glacier , are part of a complex story , ” say Tom Wagner , NASA ’s cryosphere program manager in Washington . “ artificial satellite observance are helping us understand how effect like these may relate to one another as well as to the broader clime system . ”
Son Nghiem of NASA ’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena , Calif. , was analyzing radar data from the Indian Space Research Organisation ’s ( ISRO ) Oceansat-2 artificial satellite last week when he detect that most of Greenland seem to have undergone airfoil unfreeze on July 12 . Nghiem said , “ This was so extraordinary that at first I interview the result : was this real or was it due to a datum error ? ”
Nghiem consulted with Dorothy Hall at NASA ’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt , Md. Hall study the control surface temperature of Greenland using the restrained - declaration Imaging Spectroradiometer ( MODIS ) on NASA ’s Terra and Aqua satellites . She confirm that MODIS showed unusually high temperatures and that unthaw was extensive over the ice sheet aerofoil .
Their data prove that the melting vogue was spreading quickly . On July 8 , about 40 % of the ice sheet ’s open had melted , compared to 97 % only 4 days later on July 12 .
