We use a fortune of GoPros here at Gizmodo . We use them to spud timelapsebattery trial for phonesand360 level videosof multibillion dollar transit hub andtest runsof quarter million one dollar bill cars on a grease course . So a new GoPro natural process camera with a lower Mary Leontyne Price ticket and badass features has us pumped . We ’d get it on for this to be the camera we choose to update our own fleet of GoPros — more on that in a second — but the Hero5 is in spades the one we ’d urge to a cycle orchis friend who desire to get into the action cam game .
GoPro has become the de facto action photographic camera because it ’s simple enough for anyone to use and diminished enough to go anywhere . It ’s just a supremely good value for the Leontyne Price . Sony , Olympus , and even Xioami have been twinge at GoPro ’s heel with flashy cameras that often have more features . But now , two year after the last big Hero camera , GoPro is back with a substantial update that pile in more features , retails for cheaper , and sacrifices only a minute amount of battery in the process .
The GoPro Hero5 is the 2d action camera from GoPro , after the Hero4 Silver , to feature a touch screen on the back . The Hero4 come in two variants , Silver and Black . The Silver had fewer cool telecasting modes but included that user - friendly touchscreen . The Black had all the great television mode , like shooting at 4 K at 30fps and 1080p at 120fps , but lacked a touchscreen .

The Hero5 merges the best features of both variants and tot up - on a few more like image stabilisation , which is useful when trying to get a smooth shot on the back of a dune roadster or a sick trailing shaft while perched on your CitiBike . The Hero5 is also the first GoPro with GPS build up in , which is not bad if you ’re travelling a hatful and want to lie with where exactly you spud that last great video .
The other prominent variety between the Hero4 and Hero5 is the initiation of articulation commands . you’re able to tell the Hero5 to start and stop register , which is useful for anyone hire in some extreme sporting . Bombing down a hill on a mint bike look nerveless on a GoPro , but you do not depend cool when you break the epic run to weight-lift a record button .
A “ secret ” feature is the Hero5 ’s ability to instantly bookmark selection moments in your video recording when you shout “ oh shit ” or “ that ’s mad . ” Unfortunately , you’re able to only utilize the bookmarked moments when you ’re redact with the GoPro editing suite . If you ’re using Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro or other TV editing software system you ’ll overleap out , as we hear when we make back to the office to edit the video above

Adding these new features also provides extra drainpipe on the Hero5 ’s battery and when we pitted it against a Hero4 Black we use daily we ascertain that it really died 15 min faster . But it still lasted two hr and fifteen minute . So it ’s not exactly like a 15 min loss of battery life is a deal breaker . And if you turn off the GPS and use the touch screen infrequently , you should be able to get even good battery lifespan . Which is grotesque , because any old Hero4 electric battery you have consist around wo n’t work with the Hero5 . ( Luckily , the new batteries are just $ 20 a pop . )
While the Hero4 and Hero5 largely search similar , the raw action cam boast a significant durability improvement : it ’s completely waterproof . GoPro had to correct the gizmo ’s design to make way for all the seals necessary for this sealing . That ’s why the battery is n’t the same , and why the USB - C and micro HDMI ports are hidden behind a finicky little door that ’s super hard to open . It ’s a howling business deal - off , though , because the Hero4 required a grammatical case to be rainproof , which made the television camera bulky and obnoxious to interact with . The Hero5 can take a stuff shot as abstruse as 33 feet without a case , so fiddling with fiddling doorway is a small cost to pay for less heft .
The skillful feature of the Hero5 , however , is its price . All the other features seem like innate upgrades that have existed , in some form or fashion , on devices from about all of GoPro ’s competition and even GoPro ’s own Hero4 line . But the Hero5 is the first to combine all those features with a really nice price : $ 400 . The Hero4 retail for $ 500 , when it launched back in 2014 .

If you have the Hero4 Black and want a touchscreen or the Hero4 Silver and want enlarge shooting modes—0r if you ’re still clinging to your honest-to-goodness Hero3 and feel the need to advance — then the Hero5 is a no brainer . It ’s everything that was big about the Hero4 Black and Silver , but bundled up into one tiny , waterproof gadget .
As for us : We ’ve got a fleet of Hero4 Blacks that fit us just o.k. . The new features are wondrous , and we ’ll be suggest the Hero5 to all our friends . But the novel feature article are not enough to justify the upgrade of an entire fleet of cameras that already pip gorgeous TV . For now we ’re wait for the eventual Hero6 to wow the hell out of us .
