Flying around with your own personal reverse lightning locomotive , strapped to your back , has been one of the hallmarks of futurism for 10 . Which sucks , because futurist poppycock is supposed to finally find . So why the infernal region are n’t we all flying to sour via rocket superpower ? Because you ’re about as aerodynamic as a tater , my friend . Here are five reason the jet pack just has n’t happened yet , despite proclamation that “ a practical jetpack ” will be on the mart before long .
1 . human beings are not designed to fly . Until you gene - mod a gracious aerofoil onto your back , you are never going to zoom like a bird . Nothing about the fashion you are shaped creates lift . That have in mind the super acid pack has to supply all the lift via thrust .
2 . Thrust burns a lot of fuel . All that lift power occur at a cost , and we ’re not talking $ 4 per gallon ( it ’s actually a lot more expensive than that ) . you may only vanish as far as your fuel will take you , which today is about a 30 2d flight . This is the independent cause the other problem have n’t been overcome by awesome railroad engineer yet — beyond looking cool and flying around , we do n’t really need jet camp .
That said , there are society still working on this stuff . Many of them seem to be propel in the commission of jet actuation instead of the old roquette knock engineering , which could extend longer flight times . I think Swiss railroad engineer Yves Rossy ( pictured ) has the right idea .
