In 1826 , Constable paint " The Cornfield;“ 19 old age later , Durand paint a similar work , " The Beeches . “ And so the comparison begins " ¦

. John Constable once wrote , " I should paint my own places best . “ Like Constable , Asher Durand also believe it was good to paint what one see , writing that artists should " scrupulously take over whatever [ nature ] presents him " ¦ never let him profane her sacredness by a willful departure from verity . “

. Although their works are exchangeable , Constable and Durand experienced differing degree of winner . In 1825 , at the age of 29 , Durand was already well - establish enough to find the New York Drawing Association . Constable , at the age of 52 that year , was only then being elected to the Royal Academy in England .

. Both Constable and Durand dabbled in portrayal at and were comparatively successful , though Constable found portraiture to be dull . While Constable only took up portraiture to make ends touch , Durand ’s career went the substitute route . Apparently , Durand switched to landscape house painting from portraiture after a fiscal scare and some encouragement from Thomas Cole .

. Constable died at eld 60 , supposedly from stomach upset . Fifty years later , Durand passed away at the ripe - old - age of 90 .
