Last nighttime was the midseason finis of Agents of SHIELD , and it put a passably definitive copestone on the “ alien planet ” plot line as well as the ATCU storyline . Most importantly , it afford a few of our primary characters some defining option , which turned out about as well as you ’d expect .

The most shivery part of the episode is the last few mo — first , the look on Coulson ’s face as he hugs Melinda May on his riposte from the planet he christen Tatooine . And then , Grant Ward ’s prideful return from the other satellite , except now he ’s an evil stranger zombie , possessed by the creature that lay waste to an intact civilization that once had nine neat cities . Ooops .

So the independent thing that makes this episode so gripping is the pick these characters make . Let ’s run ‘ em down one by one :

Phil Coulson dead choose revenge over expedience , and Grant Ward is sort of right when he say that this is a short - sighted and ultimately ego - destructive course . Coulson is still in the eye of grieving for Rosalind , as we see in a dream successiveness when he ’s still unconscious on the alien planet , and he ’s fundamentally set to kill Ward no matter what it takes . Grant Ward , meanwhile , finally makes his selection . Early on in the sequence , he notice a Brobdingnagian structure that his Hydra brother ostensibly built on the foreign satellite , and is fill with a new devotion to the cause . He lastly believes in something greater than himself , and no longer has any need for cloture or revenge . Before , he was just attaching himself to Hydra to get a father public figure , and then to get payback against his former SHIELD brother — but now he ’s pick up something that actually convinces him . He seems actually sincere when he tells Coulson that he ’s make a motion past all of the niggling concerns that are motivating Coulson powerful now . In fact , Ward seems like he might not even mind sacrificing his life so that the fiend can get a path to Earth .

Fitz ’s option is the saddest of all , in some ways . He makes this immense noble effort to reach out to Will — he actually risks his life to get to Will , and then convinces Ward that they necessitate Will to get them to the portal . And he is incredibly mellifluous to Will , his main wild-eyed rival for Simmons , treating him as an ally and ally from the first second they meet , because if Simmons trusts this man then so does Fitz . Even Will seems kind of startled by how seemly Fitz is being . And then … “ Will ” ca n’t serve reminiscing about the civilisation that was on this planet , and how the planet ’s denizen had a chance at greatness but threw it away . And Fitz realizes that he ’s been “ nobly ” protecting the monster that Hydra came here to witness , because this is actually a zombie repair by the foreign beast . Fitz is forced to shoot Will several times , and finally light him on fire with a flaregun — which at least succeeds in driving the creature out of him . And then Fitz has to tell Simmons that Will , who preserve her and cared about her , is dead , which is a minute we see without any dialogue , but the looks on their faces are enough .

Lilo And Stitch 2025

Simmons makes the choice that will plausibly haunt her the most . She has just break loose from the Hydra lump who were holding her captive , and quite possibly contrive to kill her as soon as they get their portal unfastened again . And she finds the containment mental faculty that is keeping Dr. Andrew Garner , Melinda ’s ex , under wrap . Andrew convince her that if she lets him go , he ’ll protect her — and he in reality delivers on his promise , killing the Hydra goons and leaving Simmons whole . But then , in full transformed into Lash , he give-up the ghost on to do what he does honest : belt down all of the Inhumans that Hydra has bestow to the evil rook , to provide an army for the exotic animate being when it comes to Earth . The bite at the end when Mack decide to ride out behind and blow the portal , and then his bunch starts dream up an alternate plan that risks more aliveness — but then Mack says “ what part of ‘ that is an order ’ did you not understand ? ” is peachy . It ’s pretty exculpated , at this point , that Mack is actually a better SHIELD director than Coulson because he has more view and a better ability to abuse back and see the enceinte exposure . And he ’s less obsessed with keeping secrets for the heck of it . It ’ll be interesting to see if Coulson recognizes that — peculiarly once Coulson is forced to confront the results of his petty thirst for retaliation in this episode : Zombie Ward !
