One of the simple wonders of exist on a spin ball with a thin atmosphere in a densely packed corner of space is the survey . Many of us dream of resolve down by a picturesque coastline or a tough mountainscape , but we so often blank out that the good scenery on planet Earth is located straight overhead .
Part of the problem is that we ’ve overwhelm that scenery out with light pollution . While there areapproximately 4,500 starsvisible from a remote location on a clear dark , that number drop to just a few hundred in the suburb , and less than fifty from the downtown of major metropolis .
Astrophotographers Harun Mehmedinovic and Gavin Heffernan are on a mission to show the modern world what it has sacrificed in the name of electrification . ThroughProject SKYGLOW , the two are locomote to remote locales around the res publica , enchant jaw - dropping footage of the Nox sky and aboveboard , making the rest of our day line seem rather lame .

Mehmedinovic ’s a la mode shoot add him to Fort Union , New Mexico , a Civil War preservation internet site located in a shortsighted pasture prairie valley along the Santa Fe Trail . Fort Union was once the site of bitter clangoring between Confederate and Union troops , admit the Battle of Glorieta Pass , which ultimately ended the Confederate army ’s bid to take over New Mexico , force its troops back into Arizona . People travel from all over the country to see the corpse of Fort Union ’s historical adobe fortress , but what many are n’t aware of is that this site also harbors some of the most pristine coloured sky in the country .
Mehmedinovic has kindly share some still images of the shoot with Gizmodo , along with “ Fort Lullaby ” a time - relapsing video that fittingly opens to “ Taps ” at dusk before transitioning into some dingy and dramatic desert melodic line as the cosmic light show begin . If you ’re as awestruck by Mehmedinovic ’s work as I am , be sure to delay out more of Project SKYGLOW onFacebook , Instagram , and atskyglowproject.com .
I do n’t know about you , but when times are saturnine , I like to commemorate that the darkness is full of star .
