The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission pass a land barter deal with SpaceX , granting Elon Musk ’s skyrocket troupe 43 acres of land that were intemperately sought after as part of preservation efforts in the area .
On Monday , the committal announced that it had authorized the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department ( TPWD ) to pursue aland trade deal with SpaceX , which would give the state around 477 acre near the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge Bahia Grande Unit in interchange for granting the ship’s company approximately 43 acres from Boca Chica State Park .
The TPWD put the deal to a ballot during a meeting in Austin , where most speakers opposed the land exchange , according toThe Texas Tribune . “ This land is our ancestral demesne . According to TPWD’sagenda : “ This acquisition would produce opportunities to expand public access and diversion in the region and permit TPWD to protect and wangle the property ’s diverse home ground , which admit lomas , coastal grassland , and wetlands . ”
Local environmentalists , however , are concerned that the land swap could pose a threat to preservation crusade in the region , with species listed under the Endangered Species Act occupy the surrounding wildlife habitat .
