Mike White , an 11 - year veteran at Disney who previously figure out at Yahoo , has been named the head of the society ’s metaverse strategy , according to a report fromReuters . The appointment , which was announce through an internal email on Tuesday , suggests Disney is look at this whole metaverse thing very seriously , even if no one can quite concord on a definition of what the metaverse even is yet .
“ For nearly 100 year , our company has define and re - defined entertainment by leverage technology to fetch report to life-time in deep , more impactful ways , ” Disney CEO Bob Chapek said in an electronic mail to Disney employee on Tuesday , according to Reuters .
“ Today , we have an opportunity to associate those existence and create an alone novel image for how audiences experience and engage with our stories , ” Chapek continued .

Disney first announce in November it had plans to make a splash in the metaverse , keep an eye on on the heels of Facebook ’s announcement that it would be changing the name of its parent company to Meta in late October .
According toReuters :
Whitehas 25 years of technology and leadership experience . Before joiningDisney in 2011 , he served as primary technology officer for Apollo Groupand before spend a decade at Yahoo , hold positions of increasingresponsibility , include director of scheme and technology . He willbe charged with putting in place a process to prioritize how to allocateresources and is expect to create a task force that will includeleaders across the company .

Whitewill report to Kareem Daniel , chairman of Disney Media andEntertainment Distribution , and to Josh D’Amaro , chairman of parks , experiences and products .
But the problem with the metaverse is that depending on who you ask , it either already live , or wo n’t exist anytime soon . In the “ already exist ” pack , it ’s promiscuous to point to honest-to-god platforms from the late 2000s like Second Life where people could meet up in a practical world , attend concerts , and evenmake money . Or , more recently , there are already platforms likeDecentraland — essentially a 2020s variation of Second Life .
In the “ wo n’t survive anytime before long ” camp we have masses who point out there is n’t much of a compelling reason for people to join anything like the metaverse unless it ’s in the descriptor of an already existing game . Why would someone want to bless up for Disney ’s “ metaverse ” unless it ’s an Animal Crossing - elan gambling experience with Mickey Mouse that support multiplayer features ? And even if Disney does release a multiplayer game like that , what make it anything more complex than a video game , and worth make a fresh name like the “ metaverse ” ?

We may receive out pretty soon , depending on what Disney ’s Mike White has up his arm .
