Two brothers have been charged with the murder of a 16-year-old Southern California girl who disappeared more than a month ago, PEOPLE confirms.

BrothersOwen Skyler Shover, age 18, and Gary Anthony Shover, age 21, were arrested on Feb. 11 and charged with the murder of Aranda Briones, who has not been seen or heard from since Jan. 13, the Riverside Sheriff’s Office announced at a press conference Tuesday.

When investigators questioned Owen Shover, he allegedly confirmed that he was the last person to see Aranda alive, telling investigators that he dropped her off at Moreno Valley Community Park, where she got into a gray, four-door sedan.

But Aranda’s family told investigators they didn’t know anyone with that kind of car — and authorities say that they were quickly able to debunk Shover’s story.

“The [surveillance] camera system was reviewed and ultimately it destroys the timeline he provided,” Durham said at the press conference Tuesday.

On Feb. 11, authorities served a search warrant at the brother’s home and collected evidence that led investigators to believe Aranda had been murdered.

The brothers have been charged with murder and remain behind bars without bail, according to jail records. They are scheduled to appear in court on March 1. It is unclear whether they have attorneys.
