One of the things that made Nickelodeon’sAvatar : The Last Airbenderso special was how well it told its story in just theright amount of prison term , using three season to take us through Aang ’s journey . Well , turn out there were provisionary plans for more — possibly with a redemption electric discharge for Zuko ’s sister , Azula . But the plan went out the windowpane for that M. Night Shyamalan movie .
Former Avatarhead writer Aaron Ehaszshared athread on Twitter — on April 1 , though he insists it ’s not an April Fool ’s trick — about one of his heavy regrets in not go along the Avatar saga on television receiver . principally , he wanted more time with Azula , Zuko ’s sister — who’d been fetch to her lowest point in the series finale , after spending most of the show trying and neglect to live up to their founder ’s impossible expectations .
Despite it all , her buddy Zuko would be there for her . Believing in her , adhere by her , doing his undecomposed to understand and serve her admit her pain in the neck that she can no longer go for alone . Zuko — patient , forgiving , and categorically loving – all strengths he gain from Uncle Iroh .

Azula ’s story wasexpandedin the subsequent Avatar graphic novel , which explored her mental health progeny and laboured family relationship with Zuko . She tried , but at last failed , to walk a new track — detect that disappear from Zuko ’s life story was the best affair she could do , only to later show up and attempt to corrupt Zuko so he ’d become a potentate like their Church Father .
For the TV serial , Ehasz wrote that he ’d intend for Azula to have a redemption arc of her own , with Zuko help her through her botheration just as Uncle Iroh had avail him . This would have taken piazza in a fourth season , which Ehasz articulate he ’d “ discussed ” with showrunners Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko .

He wrote that the showrunners ’ original programme was to do three seasons , but eventually , they ’d all looked into doing another one . To be mediocre , Ehasz had antecedently described the fourth season idea as abrief discussionprompted by Nickelodeon , but now is saying it seemed ( at the meter ) like an actual design to him , and he ’d “ always think there would be a fourth season . ”
Though to be clear , M Night want us to do a 4th season , but Mike and Bryan want to focus on the film .

They in the beginning plan on 3 . We discussed a 4th and seemed like we were run to do it . Then M Night come and they reverted to original architectural plan . That ’s what happened !
However , he wrote that any likely season four plans were junk after M. Night Shyamalan came onboard to direct the unrecorded - natural process The Last Airbender picture for Nickelodeon . According to Ehasz , Shyamalan did support them doing a fourth season , but the showrunners wanted to focalize on the live - action film ( they were executive producers on the project ) . The eternal sleep is , as we saw , veryawkward and gloss over history — but only for the pic .
I still wield the serial is staring and did n’t need a quaternary time of year , although I ’ll be the first to intromit there was still so much more floor to be tell . Hence whyThe Legend of Korraexists .

DiMartino and Konietzko have since declare that they ’re helm alive - action series adaptationof Avatar : The Last Airbender for Netflix . While it has n’t been confirmed , it does look like the Netflix version will be a remaking of the original serial publication and not a continuation or continued story , like The Legend of Korra was . Ehasz , who ’s currently helmingThe Dragon Princefor Netflix , does not look to be returning to this version of Avatar : The Last Airbender .
We reached out to Ehasz for extra comment and will update should we hear back .
