When the Academy Awards nominees wereannounced last year , the termination were rather underwhelming . There had been so few moving picture of note released in 2020 because they ’d been pushed back in hope of being released in 2021 , when the pandemic was over . Well , the pandemic is n’t over , but some studio apartment still decided to bite the slug anyway , give up gems likeDune , Spider - Man : No Way Home , Encanto , andNo Time to Die — which has made this class ’s craw of Oscar nominees much more exciting , at least for fans .
As you all probably guess , of the sci - fi , fantasy , repugnance , and superhero movies that are io9 ’s nerdy bread and butter , Denis Villeneuve ’s Dune did quite well for itself . The movie adjustment of Frank Herbert ’s germinal skill fiction novel earned 10 nominations , include for Best Picture , Adapted Screenplay , Visual Effects , and more . Other genre nods include Encanto and Netflix ’s The Mitchells vs. The Machines for Best Animated Feature , No Time to Die for Sound and Original Song , and climate disaster clowning Do n’t Look Up , joining Dune in Best Picture .
