The world is full of delectable solid food and beautiful people , and sometimes it ’s hard to turn down their various good luck charm . But now a team of researchers has used datum from fMRI scans to successfully predict weight profit and sexual activity — and can tell if you ’re likely to come down foul of temptation well in advance .
Using useable MRI scans , a team of scientist from Dartmouthhas been studying a region of the brain known as the nucleus accumbens — part that people often come to to as the “ reinforcement core ” . In fact , the researchers round up a grouping of first class university scholar and then scanned their brainpower while showing them neutral image — such as environmental aspect — or something rather more alluring : pictures of appetizing intellectual nourishment of titillating photographs .
After process the data from the scans , the researchers await six months before asking each player to fulfil in a questionnaire . They found that those hoi polloi whose reward centers answer most powerfully to picture of food had gained importantly more weighting than the others . Likewise , those whose brains had responded most strongly to erotic images had gone on to be more sexually active . The enquiry appears in tomorrow ’s military issue ofThe Journal of Neuroscience .
With temptation all around us , it can sometimes be hard to avoid give in . unhappily , even though the researchers can now predict your weight increase or intimate needs , it ’s still up to you to manipulate your impulse . William Kelley , one of the investigator , agree :
“ We seek to interpret situations in which masses face temptation and render to not act on them … You need to actively be thinking about the behavior you require to control in decree to regulate it . Self - rule require a lot of conscious effort . ”
