A Library of Congress repugn invites young people to write letters to authors ( living or gone ) . The late award goes to Devi Acharya , who tells Orwell , “ You should n’t have published those Quran of yours under the guise of fiction — how could fiction be what ’s encounter outside my very doorsill ? ”
Previous letters , compose by students between the eld of 9 and 18 , have been addressed to Ray Bradbury , Anne Frank , Dr. Seuss and Sharon Draper . The new people are encouraged to explain how the author ’ books have affected their lives .
Here ’s Acharya’sletterto George Orwell — a message from the perspective of someone grow up in the surveillance bon ton of the 21st century :

You were right , you were right , you were right . I ’m distressing I never saw it before , and I find like an idiot , sitting here and compose this to you when you were so indescribably correct . You should n’t have bring out those books of yours under the guise of fiction — how could fiction be what ’s happen outside my very doorsill ! hoi polloi get so worked up , angry at some imaginary tyrannous tyrant when the very dystopias we fear and loathe are being build around us … Soon only the fortress , a citadel cutting down any hope of sexual love or compassion , will remain , with every citizen grip tight in the steely apathy of law .
I first understand “ Animal Farm ” when I was young — too youthful to understand it . I intend of it as a humorous fable , nothing more . Every daytime I take care oppression — in the news program , on the street , in my home . Every daytime I watched as subordinate seek to come up above their rulers , getting intoxicated on power and imposing rule rough than even that of former autocrat … My eyes might have been as unsighted as those vacant stares about me , but to my credit I did note . I watched people and places and motivations and reactions . I tried to piece my world together through the map you make .
Then came your oeuvre “ 1984 . ” This piece was the tonality that turn the lock in my intellect , allow me to see that this was veridical , that vigilance was needed . I saw in my slovenly compatriots the human face of Parsons , and in my fellow youth those trained only to follow order and the ruck under the pretense of “ teambuilding ” and crafting “ part . ” I find out the sitting , the scare tactics , the hypes and hysteria . I saw the infliction of real act of terrorism as it happened , and then saw the far more expansive , far more pestilent panic and paranoia of imagined threats of terrorism .

Now what do I see when I presume to pretend outside my tiny safe oasis ? trailer circling overhead . Cellphones that tail every move ; whose conversation are being immortalize and take apart arbitrarily for any sign of suspicion . More and more data has been released , telling evidence of our origin into dystopia — and yet masses seem to become ever more complacent ! Scandals fuck up up in a solar day and are sound the next . tragedy embossment sustain attention perhaps only a few calendar month . People would much rather go in an earned run average where superheroes and men with guns can solve all the problem in the world . And I must confess , I ca n’t pick them for that .
I am not order , sir , that I think that every aspect of society is awful and must be usurped , rescind , destroyed . I love this world . That ’s why I desire to protect it . I am say ( as you have always aver ) that people must always watch the world around them instead of drifting between obligations and pleasance , as so many do now . That ’s the reason I publish this letter — to say ( for it must be reiterated this one last meter ) that you were right . Right to keep your books , right to do all that you have done to better the earth . I , too , have start my first steps in the world of composition , describing the world I see around me just as you did . I hope to be , just as you have been , an beholder spinning my cautionary tales , and attempt to aid the world understand .
You are truly an inspiration . Your words will reverberate in this world for one C to come .

Goodbye for now ,
Devi Acharya
